Jiangsu Province: an ideal place for investment
Jiangsu Province is situated along China's east coastline
where the Changjiang R iver empties itself into the sea. The
land covers an area of 102,600 square kilo meters and has
a population of 72 million. It is one of the most developed
provi nces in the fields of economy, culture and science,
and therefore an ideal place for investment.
The province enjoys rich tourist resources and a large tourist
market. It is one of the seven key tourist provinces or cities
in the country. There are seven na tional historic cities,
five China's best tourist cities, sixteen national or pr ovincial
scenic regions, six national or provincial holiday resorts
and over thi rty national or provincial forest parks and wild
life conservations. There are a lso 350 cultural and historic
spots under the protection of the state or the pro vince.
In 1999, the per capita GDP of the province was 10,694 yuan,
which ranked among the top few in the country. Because of
the improvement in the people's li fe, there is an increasing
demand for tourism.
Water is the most special feature of the area. The Changjiang
River and the anci ent Grand Canal cut across each other here.
Lakes and ponds of various sizes sca tter all over the place.
The south of the province especially abounds with water country
flavor. The hills in the province are all connceted with stories
or leg ends in the history. The good examples are the Purple
Mountain in Nanjing, the G olden Hill in Zhenjiang, the Flower
& Fruit Mountain in Lianyungang, the Dragon Hill in Xuzhou
and the Wolf Hill in Nantong.
Cultural heritage is the pride of the province. All the major
cities boast a his tory of over two thousand years. The city
wall of Nanjing was built in the Ming Dynasty. This wellprotected
wall is still the longest in the world. Dr. Sun Ya tsen's
mausoleum is an excellent presentation of the eastern and
western archi tectural styles. The classical gardens in Suzhou
are part of the world's cultura l heritage. The ancient town
of Zhouzhuang represents the beauty and elegance of the waterside
towns in China. The 88meter high bronze buddha is the highest
s tanding Buddha in the world. The newly developed tourist
spots attract a lot of domestic visitors. For example, places
like the Suzhou Amusement Park, Wuxi CCTV Movie Base and the
sea beach in Lianyungang receive over a million visitors eac
h year. The exquisite handicrafts, the delicious food and
the folk festivals are also good tourist attractions. Sightseeing
tours, holiday tours, ecotours and special interest tours
meet the needs of different tourists.
In the past twenty years of opening and reform process, tourist
industry in Jian gsu has gained a rapid development. At present,
a plan for the multiplication of the tourist output is been
carried out, which will push the tourist industry in to one
of the pillar industries of the province. In 1999, the province
received 1.35 million oerseas tourists, earning 620 million
US dollars, both ranking the fifth in the country, also gaining
an annual growth rate of 15% and 24.3% separa tely in the
last four years. The domestic tourists received last year
reached 66 million, which generated 510 hundred million RMB,
gaining an annual growth rate of 21.8% and 31% in the last
four years. Tourism added value in 1999 reached 22 3 hundred
million RMB, taking up 2.9% of the provincial GDP.
